“How much does an app cost?” It’s a fair question — and yet no serious provider can answer it off the cuff. Not out of bad faith, but because “an app” can mean anything from a simple connected form to a full platform. Let’s look at what actually moves the price.
What drives the bill
- The feature scope: every screen, every business rule, every edge case is design and development time. By far the biggest lever.
- The platforms: web only, mobile only, or both? Native iOS + Android costs more than a shared Flutter codebase.
- The design: an adapted template doesn’t cost the same as a bespoke interface, crafted pixel by pixel.
- The integrations: payment, maps, connections to your existing tools, SMS/email sending… each connection adds complexity.
- The back-end: an app that stores data, manages accounts and an admin panel needs a server, a database and security.
- Maintenance: an app is alive. Fixes, store updates, evolutions: plan for them from the start.
Some ballpark figures
It’s impossible to quote a price without scoping, but a few useful markers: a first usable product (MVP) usually takes 4 to 10 weeks of development. It’s often the best entry point: we ship a solid, focused version, in production, then grow it with real user feedback.
The real risk isn’t paying too much. It’s paying for features nobody uses.
How to stay in control of your budget
- Start small, but usable. A well-scoped MVP beats an unfinished monster.
- Prioritise ruthlessly. Which features truly create value at launch?
- Demand transparency. A clear quote, regular check-ins, and you always know where your budget goes.
At Wisepear techlab, we work on a fixed price for a defined scope, or time-and-materials for ongoing support — and the code always belongs to you.
